ALWAYS GET PERMISSION

As teenagers, my friend Chris and I used to get a buzz from wild camping somewhere we probably shouldn’t have been. We didn’t have the landowner’s permission, and in the morning there was the thrill of knowing we had got away with it. I’m not suggesting that you do the same. Before you sleep anywhere you should always seek the landowner’s permission, as you’re not going to find the experience very relaxing if you get woken up in the middle of the night by an angry landowner.

Do some research before you go and look at the local laws to see what you can and can’t do (which might change depending on the time of the year). As a general rule, wild camping is permitted in Scotland and in a few places in England and Wales, such as Dartmoor National Park which has specific wild camping sites (but is often tolerated in most other places). Have a look at what’s possible near you.
